Diarrhea is one of the most concerning factors that any parent will face. Diarrhea can be scary because it can mean anything from a simple change of diet to a full blown illness. It can also have almost no effect, or could cause your child to become sicker. Therefore, when your child has diarrhea, it is important to know a few basic pieces of information so that you know what to do.
First of all, diarrhea can be caused from lots of things – anywhere from a change in the mother's diet while breastfeeding, to a major illness. Some soft stools are perfectly common in a child who is breastfeeding, and if a mother changes her diet she might see even more. This alone isn't something to be concerned about, and as long as it doesn't happen more than once, it is probably not a big deal. All in all, babies' stools will vary with the food that they eat, and different types of food will cause different consistencies of stools. However, if a stool is mostly water, or is very, very runny, this is probably diarrhea and you should watch your child very carefully.
Diarrhea might be caused by lots of factors, but most likely it is a symptom of an infection or an illness. If your child has diarrhea, the biggest thing to worry about is dehydration. This is because too much moisture is leaving your baby through her stools, and she could become very dehydrated very quickly. A baby has much less room for hydration than an adult normally, so a baby will become dehydrated much more quickly than an adult will. If your baby has diarrhea, watch for signs of dehydration. This might include fewer wet diapers, being lethargic, not hungry, or feeling dry to the touch. If you suspect that your baby is dehydrated or if you worry that she might become so, talk to a doctor right away. Dehydration is something that can be very serious in babies, so be sure that you are giving her plenty of liquids and watching her carefully. Also, be sure that you figure out the underlying cause of the diarrhea and get it taken care of as soon as possible.
