infants

watching for

reactions

  • Wait at least 1 week between introducing new foods to watch for reactions (diarrhea, rashes, vomiting, coughing, wheezing, general irritability, hives, stomach pain).
  • If a baby seems to be having a severe reaction to a food (e.g., hives, difficulty breathing, or shock), contact the rescue squad or Emergency Medical Service.
  • If a baby does not like the taste of a new food at first, you can try offering it again 3 or 4 weeks later.

 Drinking Water

  • A baby’s doctor may recommend feeding a small amount of sterile water in a cup when solid foods are introduced. Sterile water is water that is brought to a very bubbly boil, boiled for 1 to 2 minutes, and then allowed to cool.
