From that first community health center, the College Point Health Center in Columbia Massachusetts, there is now a Community Health Center in every state of the union. Thanks to individuals like Dr Jack Geiger for his leadership, foresight, advocacy and passion and unyielding quest for excellence
Morris Heights Health Center after two years of planning under the rubric of Morris Heights Neighborhood Improvement Association (MHNIA) opened its door to business in March 1981, at the intersection of Harrison and Burnside Avenues. With a staff of fifteen – including two physicians, one nurse practitioner, one registered nurse, one nutritionist, and a part time obstetrician and gynecologist physician, the Center began in earnest to meet the health and social needs of the community residents. At this period in time, the population had shrunk to about 28,000 due to the abandonment that accompanied social unrest of the 60’s and 70’s. In August of the same year, dental services were added and a general dentist was added to the provider staff.
Twenty nine years later we are a multi site business with facilities in several locations in the Bronx. We currently operate 8 school based health clinics; a mobile unit; 4 primary care sites; 2 community based service sites that provides Facilitated enrollment and home visiting services with a focus on child development and parenting. Collectively, these sites serve over 60,000 individuals with primary, social, dental and mental health services annually.
